Theft Really Sucks

September 29, 2007 9:21 pm / 1 Comment / Pat McCarthy

thiefpic.jpg A few weeks ago my car window was bashed in during the middle of the night parked in front of my house and my stereo and sunglasses were stolen. Beyond it just being annoying that it’s against the law and to have your stuff stolen, I also had to spend time and money to get the window replaced and get a new stereo.

Then today our other car was left unlocked outside for a little while in front of my wife’s parents house in a decent neighborhood during the middle of the day while they were home, and we arrive and find out to find about 20 kids DVDs were stolen out of the car. Luckily the DVDs were all that were stolen, but it’s still really irritating. I know far greater travesties are occurring all over the world every day, but it was just another close to home reminder that human behavior is not as good as I normally think it is.

It’s Going To Be a Boy!

September 27, 2007 12:09 am / 4 Comments / Pat McCarthy

While I love the fact that my wife and I have already been so lucky to have two wonderful girls, we found out today that we’ll be having a boy sometime this February. While I would have been very happy with another girl as well, it’s going to be a great experience to raise a boy and have a son. My wife and our girls seem very excited, but let’s just hope he’s not as much of a web nerd as I am.

Wow, the Facebook Valuation is Getting Crazy

September 25, 2007 4:35 am / 3 Comments / Pat McCarthy

Yes, like everyone else I think Facebook is a well-done and valuable internet property. They’ve executed really well, managed to steal the thunder from Myspace, and are the darling of Silicon Valley.

But until they prove they can monetize their audience in a very powerful manner, how is a $10-$15 billion valuation justified even in these bubbly times?

The Right Media Open Starts Coming Together

At a previous job I was in charge of the ecommerce and content properties and web analytics was one of my big areas of focus. Our primary analytics provider was WebsideStory (now called Visual Sciences), and each year they held a user conference where customers of their product got together with the staff at WebsideStory to learn, share, network, and have fun. It was an event I enjoyed a great deal as a customer and someone interested in the analytics space.

Full RSS Feeds Please!

September 6, 2007 11:17 am / 2 Comments / Pat McCarthy

Over the last year as I’ve used a Blackberry at work and iPhone for personal use I realized I mostly do my RSS feed reading on my phones now while traveling. What this has primarily done, is taught me that the mobile web is going to become increasingly important in the future. I know, that wasn’t really that unique of a revelation. Perhaps a minor but more actionable revelation is that summary only RSS feeds just suck. They really do.

The Online Advertising Plot Thickens: Yahoo! Buys Blue Lithium

September 4, 2007 3:24 pm / 7 Comments / Pat McCarthy

My employer announced today that we’ve bought Blue Lithium, one of the top five ad networks in the USA and the 2nd largest network in the UK.

This is exciting for a couple of reasons:

1. Allows one of the largest ad networks in the world to begin buying and integrating with the Right Media Exchange providing more demand and publisher supply. Adding Yahoo!’s inventory and advertiser demand to that of Blue Lithium’s and all the advertisers, publishers, and ad networks already participating is creating a vast and very liquid exchange.

2. Yahoo! is positioning itself to truly be a holistic advertising powerhouse, and is leaving no doubt who will lead the display advertising space. It’s going to be fun.
