The problem is "ripoff" carries many definitions. I've seen plenty of infomercials, and while a few of them are obvious pyramid schemes, most are just normal products. The only thing these "ripoffs" are guilty of might be being obnoxious and having a low production budget.

I wrote about this yesterday as well. I argue that this is really all about your audience expectations. They are either ok with these types of ads, or they're not. That's how your brand is defined, buy what your customers think of you.

I think there is a big difference between TV and the web. I don't personally equate the commercials I see on a TV channel with that channel as a brand. The channel has the show I'm watching, and everthing else is unrelated. There is no CBS logo in the bottom right during commercials right?

The web is different. When low quality ads are shown on my site, they are shown right next to my logo and all around my carefully crafted content. They are much more closely linked to my website and therefore they need to be much higher quality. I'd like to see the low quality ads eliminated, or at least have the ability to filter them out myself.

You say these ads make money...I can't imagine what kind of user clicks these things! They certainly didn't pay for my traffic...
