Fighting Against Errorsafe

March 26th, 2007

MikeOnAds, a colleague of mine at Right Media, has taken on one of the dark parts of the online advertising world. He’s created a page that educates and suggests action for how to deal with the Errorsafe scam, a type of advertising that ends up installing nasty desktop software on user’s machines.

Give it a good read, there’s a lot there, but it’s important that people know about the problem and that the online advertising industry works to stop it.

What is right media doing to prevent re-vending of these adware generated impressions through the multiple networks buying and selling on the exchange?

How do impressions from stuff like Targetsaver and Fullcontext make it through the adware filters?

    Hi napaspa,

These two posts outline what we’re doing:

    http://blog.rightmedia.com/2007/03/15/work-to-be-done/

    http://blog.rightmedia.com/2007/01/27/banner-ops-and-errorsafe/

The reasons filters struggle with this stuff is because the bad behavior is often targeted to only trigger in certain geographies and at certain times of day, and may even be delayed a few weeks after the start of a campaign. It’s tricky stuff, but we’re obviously working diligently to defeat it and track down the people doing it wherever possible.
