These guide is very much important for every website owner because analytics helps in lot aspects not only tracking the visits, we can check the page visited from which country, we can plan strategies using analytics and also we can find where to target and which keywords to use, etc.

I have been using for 2 years now the XiTi product from AT Internet. Easy to install, based on tags, plenty of stats, free version and paid one. Really impressive and much much better than all the others above. Check it out at www.xiti.com.

I've been looking for a good free Open Source analytics package for a while now. phpMyVisites is the closes I've come. It gives me the stats I want... but... it doesn't include today in the week, month or year stats- so it looks like the application can't do math. It also doesn't have the nicest design to the interface. These are the only two things keeping me from rolling phpMyVisites out to my clients's websites.

I've tried looking at the internals of the software and it's not something I could fix myself without major work. Maybe I'll make my own version, then I'll get bought by Google and retire rich! lol

What about Urchin? I don't mean Google Analytics but the actual Urchin installed software. Version 5 is current and Google is supposedly working on version 6.

Great breakdown, though slightly off about some of the information. For instance, even at the time of the article's original date, WebTrends was on version 8 and they were the ones who nabbed Microsoft, not Omniture.

Best list I have seen yet.
My company has an alternative method of capturing the web data using pasive data capture. Some of the major e-commerce sites use it to feed their datawarehouses and analytics pacakges because tagging is just too much work and the amount of data they get from server logs is overwhelming. Passive data capture gives them cleaned, filered and sessionized data in a single log. We feed packages such as Webtrends by emulating the tag server. We also have two analytics offerings that are already integrated. Our largest site did well over 100million pageviews in a single day last holiday period!

Another big advantage is that we can feed other applications which can be created to look at web data without compromising web servers ontent servers. And we get real-time performence data all in the same package.
