Techmeme’s Sponsorship Blog Ads

Technology news aggregator/tracker Techmeme has announced they are now accepting advertising in the form of three sponsored boxes in their sidebar that are RSS feeds to the company blogs of the companies choosing to advertise.

Many influential blogs are hailing this as a whole new form of advertising, when really it’s a concept that was prevalent in the 90s with syndicated headlines being pushed to content sites. This is really just a new spin on that since it’s now company blogs with RSS feeds instead.

That being said, I do enjoy that it’s different, and it might be a good avenue for companies to give their blogs more exposure. There are some good company blogs out there that don’t get as much readership as they probably should, and this could help uncover that.

Of course, it’s up to the companies to keep providing compelling headlines and content in that sponsorship spot to make it worth their ad spend. At a price of $4,500, $3,500, and $3,000 for the three spots, this ends up ranging from a $5-$8 CPM. That could be expensive, or a bargain depending on what your company is and how well you leverage the opportunity.

In the true nature of this medium, I’d love to see some of the initial sponsor companies (who are getting much more exposure than the next round of advertisers will because of the launch coverage) actually post the results of their advertising.
