Yahoo’s Panama Is Still Catch Up
May 8th, 2006
Lots of people are talking about Yahoo announcing the details of their “Panama” update to their Yahoo Search Marketing advertising platform.
While I am very excited that they’re going to update it and improve what many have felt is a weakness, I still just feel like they’ll never beat Google by playing catch up. In reading the details, it sounds like they’re just trying to imitate Google. Obviously Google has had success, and perhaps imitating Google will bring Yahoo more advertising dollars then they are currently getting, but will it ever let them overtake them? I don’t think it can. Having less search traffic and being a year or two behind Google on the platform just doesn’t seem like the winning combination.
I know there are a lot of smart people at Yahoo, they must realize this as well. It’ll be interesting to watch this battle continue.
