The reason I use myspace is because most of my good friends don't live in the same town, some even in the same state as me, and it allows me to still keep in contact with them, share pictures, etc all without having to be online at the same time, or email 30 different people

Also I use it to for listening to new tracks from some bands.

Easy solution; I love it!

why are you that terrified of myspace? its not like it's going to take over the world or kill you. If someone's that stupid to put there phone number/address on their site then thats different...but really what is it going to do? i absolutley LOVE myspace...i look forward to going home everyday and getting on. The schools block the sites so we cant ge on durring school which i guess i agree with, but other than that its not going to change the world. So i say lighten up have fun, myspace is a place for meeting new friends, not to be scared of it...
im trying to put your points down im just trying to understand. So have a nice day....

The last paragraph should read:

"The scariness is that there aren't very many easy answers to my questions (at least that I can see) - or to the questions that a community of that size could create."

Not sure if that's any clearer though ;-)

Pat, wrong definition of scary. Not scary as in "oooh, I don't know how I can ever understand those Internets". More scary as in "we can't answer the questions that a community of 100M or 250M people will create".

And, agreed, MySpace isnt' at the level of importance where it deserves to be backed up for the sake of society. But, IF it exerts its own cultural effects on society as a whole, I think it would be worth looking. Just like taking yearly backups of Google and storing them somewhere is being considered by some smart folk already.

I'm *not* trying to say that MySpace is bad, that it should be shut down or that it should be changed.

Merely that when a community gets to a certain size, I'm wondering what that means for the web, for society and for that community.

The scariness is that there aren't very many easy answers to my questions (at least that I can see).

I see your point now Jeremy, but I still don't see why society needing to create backups of Myspace for cultural or historical purposes is scary. I assume it's scary just from a standpoint of losing that cultural and historical history, as if we lost some great works of art or books. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but with all the quality stuff/junk that's on the web, it's hard for me to put Myspace at that importance level yet.

No offence, but I think you're missing the point. For example, on backing up MySpace and Google, I wasn't saying they weren't backing up. I was asking if it was society's duty to create point-in-time backups (a la Library of Congress) of the systems, if they begin to represent a significant portion of society and culture.

Not that any of what you're saying is bad, but it also wasn't responding to the underlying thread of what I was saying. I'll post more in a day or two, after I've heard some more responses. It could be that I'm just off base, after all ;-)

His fears are very unfounded. The MySpacers will eventually move on to all of the other great things that the internet has to offer. Everything on the web now that is good, will still be here and improved upon as time goes by.
